The Red Sea is a rich and diverse ecosystem. Where there are more than 1200 species of fish that have been recorded in the Red Sea, and there are about 10% of them that are not found in other places. This also includes 42 species of deep water fish.
The rich diversity is partly due to the 2,000 km (1,240 mi) coral reefs along its coastline, these adjacent reefs are between 5,000-7,000 years old and composed mostly of acropora and rock-coral porites. The reefs form berths and sometimes salt lakes along the coast and sometimes transverse as cylinders (as in the Blue Hole in the resort of Dahab). These coastal reefs are also visited by species of Red Sea fish
The Red Sea also contains many coastal reefs, including many atolls. Many of the unusual beach reefs defied traditional (eg Darwinian) coral reef classification schemes, generally attributed to the high levels of tectonic activity that characterize the area.
